What can we learn from PUNC?

The future belongs to professionals who can navigate the world and its complexities with confidence, not despite uncertainty but through it. So, in a world that's increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA), how do we prepare the next generation of professionals to handle the experienced uncertainty productively?
That's exactly the question the PUNC (Professional UNcertainty Competence) project set out to answer. Brought together by six European partners — including University of Gdańsk, HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Business Academy Aarhus, Turku UAS, Universitat Politècnica de València, and the educational company INNOCAMP — the project tackled a critical competence gap: the ability to handle uncertainty productively.
Here's what PUNC taught us:
Uncertainty is not a problem to be eliminated — it's a force that, when engaged well, drives resilience and creative collaboration.
Educators need concrete tools and frameworks to develop this mindset in learners. PUNC delivered exactly that: a best practices map for VUCA learning environments, a competence framework, a practical toolbox, and e-portfolio solutions for recognizing uncertainty competence.
Cross-border collaboration between higher education, research, and business is essential — and it works
So what's next?
PUNC laid the foundation. Now it's time to build on it. Enter the TRIC Project (Towards Innovative Communities: Making Uncertainty Productive).
Where PUNC focused on equipping educators and higher education learners, TRIC takes this further: helping young adults to handle uncertainty in transition points in their (professional) life, like from school to work, of the reverse, or from culture to culture. In TRIC eleven partners in 6 European countries joined forces to address this matter. Because a stronger Europe doesn't just recover from uncertainty. It grows through it. Julia Solarz
